Eric Lefkofsky: Curing Cancer with Data

Forty-seven-year-old Eric Lefkofsky is a serial entrepreneur who’s known for his successful startup companies. While he stated that he doesn’t like starting up companies, at least this late in Eric Lefkofsky career, he’s doing it anyways.

When Lefkofsky’s wife came down with breast cancer, he was devastated. Like many family members of cancer patients, he attended his wife’s cancer treatments and doctor’s appointments. He was surprised to learn of the huge lack in data available to doctors. According to Lefkofsky, we provide more data to truck drivers than to doctors who are trying to cure cancer.

This prompted him to start up his latest company, Tempus. This venture focuses on centralizing and streamlining data for doctors. Lefkofsky hopes to provide doctors with a system of data that they can use to guide cancer treatment.

What’s even more impressive is that in addition to starting up a data company in hopes to progressing cure for cancer, he’s even self-funding it. Lefkofsky’s worth an estimated $1.7 million net, and now that cancer’s hit so close to home, he stated that he’s willing to invest millions towards the cause of providing a cure for it. It’s a noble endeavor indeed and one that will have the capability to impact the lives of millions in a positive way if cancer proves successful.

Advocacy for the Rights of The Marginalized

There is a large number of organizations that have rendered yeoman service to the cause of the marginalized and underprivileged in the United States. Among the foremost has to be the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. The genesis of the fund lies in the $3.75 million settlement received by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin due to their wrongful arrest and confinement by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Deciding to put the money to good use the journalists Lacey and Larkin decided to set up the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund to provide support to groups advocating worthy causes like human rights, migrants’ rights, civil rights and freedom of speech.

One of the notable groups raising a voice in the support of immigrants is Welcoming America an advocacy group launched in the year 2009 that helps spread the message that immigrants are more than welcome in America a nation created by immigrants. They have popularized an award-winning social entrepreneurship model that has garnered them global recognized. Read more: Jim Larkin | Crunchbase

Then there is Civil Rights Corps an advocacy group committed to fighting against instances of systemic abuse in the US justice system. They do so by engaging with people convicted in the courts, activists, judges and government officials to foster a legal system that is equally fair, just and transparent to all, regardless of their background. The Human Rights Party is as the name suggests a political party committed to the promotion of human rights. Their stated objectives are to win enough seats in the House of Representatives, thereby denying a majority to any single party and help create and pass legislation that will ensure life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for everybody.

The ACLU or American Civil Liberties Union has worked extremely hard for over a century to secure the rights of individuals guaranteed by the Constitution of the U.S., In particular, they have taken up the cause of the persecuted and marginalized lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. It is their belief that they need the rights just as everyone else does to have personal autonomy, freedom of expression and association.

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) is the foremost media advocacy organization that unequivocally promotes the cause of Latinos in America. This organization was founded in Los Angles in 1986 and has gone on to become a powerful voice in support of the Hispanic population of America.

It is quite a powerful organization that is engaged in the advocacy of the Hispanic concerns to the power that be, through its presence in major areas like California, New York, Arizona, Michigan and Washington, D.C.

Thus we see that advocacy for the right causes is happening all the time, across the length and breadth of the United States of America.

This is a good sign that American democracy is a vibrant one and happy to change course and become even better if given the right inputs. The nation should be thankful to people like Michael Lacey and Larkin and initiatives like the Lacey-Larkin Frontera Fund.
